Bayern have no answer to James: Monaco rejoice in Munich

Bayern Munich failed to polish up their Euroleague record against AS Monaco on Friday evening – and conceded a home defeat.

FC Bayern missed out on a place in the top ten in the Euroleague. The Munich club suffered its ninth defeat in its 16th game against AS Monaco by 80:91 (31:46). Sylvain Francisco was FCB’s best scorer at BMW Park with 21 points. Apart from the Frenchman, only Carsen Edwards scored in double figures for the home side (16). In contrast, four players scored in double figures for the visitors: Mike James topped them all with a strong 28 points, Elie Okobo scored 19, Alpha Diallo 13 and John Brown 12.

While the hosts were still on an equal footing with Monaco in the first quarter in front of national soccer player Mats Hummels, they trailed by a larger margin early on in the second period. The visitors’ deep bench was particularly noticeable. Munich was already 15 points behind at the break

After the restart, Bayern again missed too many baskets, but certainly had its moments and fought its way back to within seven points. However, Monegasque proved to have more staying power, acting more efficiently in the final quarter and ultimately bringing Munich to its knees in commanding fashion.

The defeat leaves FC Bayern in twelfth place in the table, while AS Monaco, who sensationally stormed into the Final Four tournament last year, are now back in sixth place. The visitors’ victory was absolutely deserved, as the team of former BBL player and coach of Alba Berlin, Sasa Obradovic, led almost throughout.
