Labor victory against bottom-of-the-table Sheffield: Liverpool defend top spot

Liverpool deservedly won 3-1 against bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United to stay top of the table. After Bradley’s own goal, Mac Allister once again put the Reds on the road to victory with a stunning strike

Jürgen Klopp was without the injured former Stuttgart player Endo against bottom-of-the-table Sheffield Wednesday. Otherwise, coach Jürgen Klopp opted for the usual faces: Luis Diaz and Darwin started alongside Salah. Mac Allister formed the midfield along with Gravenberch and Szoboszlai, two other well-known professionals from the Bundesliga.

McAtee gives the underdogs an early lead

As the heavy favorites, the Reds had to endure difficult minutes in the early stages. Sheffield had a great chance to take the lead less than a minute later, but McAtee was denied by Kelleher. Liverpool then took control of the game and played their usual dominant soccer

Darwin forces the 1:0

The Klopp team exuded enthusiasm for the game and repeatedly combined forward at speed: Salah (6., 14.) came close to scoring twice, a little later Darwin scored the 1:0: The Uruguayan went for keeper Grbic early on and blocked his attempted clearance, allowing the ball to trickle into the net (17.).

The Reds kept at it and pressed for the second goal. Sheffield United were barely able to break free at this stage and were lucky that shots from Darwin (21), Mac Allister (34) and Gravenberch (42) did not find their way into the net. The team at the bottom of the table made occasional pinpricks themselves, but these did not lead to a goal.

Bradley’s own goal brings Sheffield back into the game

The first goal after the restart belonged to the Reds, who failed to beat Grbic from distance in the person of Salah (49′). At the other end, however, it was the underdogs who pulled a goal back out of nowhere: Bradley’s header from Hamers was unfortunately deflected through Kelleher’s legs and into his own goal (58′).

Mac Allister’s next dream goal

Liverpool needed just under a quarter of an hour to recover from the goal. However, Klopp’s side then found their attacking form again and created chances: first Robertson missed with a direct shot (75′), then Mac Allister put the Reds back on the winning track just a minute later: the Argentinian fired the ball beautifully into the corner from around 17 meters.

Liverpool had everything under control in the closing stages and had several opportunities to increase their lead: Only substitute Gakpo took his chance and scored with his head after a Robertson cross to decide the game (90′). After Arsenal moved past the Reds with a 2-0 win over Luton on Wednesday, the men from Anfield Road are now back at the top of the table

Notorious opponents await both teams next weekend. The Reds visit Manchester United on Sunday (4.30pm), while the Blades face Chelsea FC two hours later.
