Ex-Leipzig man Lookman keeps Atalanta top of the table

Ademola Lookman shot Atalanta Bergamo to the top of the Serie A table this Saturday, at least overnight. A debut in the first 45 minutes didn’t turn out to be expensive because of it

In the 41st minute, Atalanta fans and their team were amazed when Sassuolo’s advanced defender Georgios Kyriakopoulos powerfully drove the ball under the crossbar after a cross from the right to put his colours in the lead.

It was not only a surprising 0:1 for the Bergamo club, who had been the favourites until then, but also a first. In the first nine match days, the unbeaten Lombards had not conceded a single (!) goal – a season record in the top five European leagues. So that spell was broken.

Pasalic and Lookman do it for Atalanta

However, this goal in the 41st minute, which was absolutely worth seeing, did not put the Bergamasques off their game. On the contrary, striker Pasalic would equalise shortly afterwards with his first goal of the season (45.+1) after a well-considered pass from Soppy. And immediately after the restart, Soppy put the ball through for Lookman. The former Leipzig striker made a fine hook and converted superbly with the help of the underside of the crossbar to make it 2-1 – and that in the 46th minute.

That was to be the final score, because Atalanta did not let anything happen – apart from a shot against the crossbar by Sassuolo’s joker Berardi (64th). With a double strike shortly before and shortly after the break, the Lombards, who did not even qualify for international competitions last season after years of success, thus bagged their seventh win of the season. At the same time, the Bergamo side, who have jumped to first place at least temporarily, put previous leaders Napoli under pressure.
