Drama in the relegation battle: Cadiz and Mallorca saved – Granada down

In dramatic relegation matches, FC Granada, FC Cadiz and RCD Mallorca fought long-distance duels for relegation. Despite the best starting position before the match day, Granada will go to the Spanish lower house, Cadiz and Mallorca will stay in the class.

Granada had the best starting position before the decisive 38th matchday, with one point more than their rivals from Cadiz and Mallorca, FC were in 16th place. With the already rescued promoted Espanyol Barcelona, they also had a supposedly feasible task in front of them and their relegation was completely in their own hands. However, a three-goal win was a must if Granada wanted to avoid any more tremors. But this did not happen: goals were scarce on both sides over 90 minutes, Granada even missed a penalty (Molina, 72nd), so FCG had to rely on help from Osasuna and Alaves. But there was to be none of that.

Mallorca prevails

In the duel with CA Osasuna, promoted RCD Mallorca were challenged. With 36 points, they were 17th in the table before the game – level on points with their direct rivals from Cadiz. The visitors therefore also had their relegation in their own hands, as they had won the direct comparison with 18th place. After a goalless first half, Angel had the visitors cheering shortly after the restart: After a fine combination, the attacker slid the ball into the net from close range (47th). Ten minutes before the final whistle, Grenier made it perfect: after a header by Prats, the midfielder converted the rebound from close range (83rd).

Cadiz save themselves late – Granada relegated

Cadiz, 18th in the table, had a good chance of winning at last-place Alaves, but at the same time they had to hope for support from Osasuna or Barcelona. But Cadiz lacked the necessary offensive energy and the score remained 0-0 for a long time. In the 76th minute, Lozano redeemed his team: After a strong cross from Iza, the striker pushed the ball over the line. The visitors held on to their lead in the last 15 minutes and took advantage of Granada’s 0-0 to stay in La Liga.

So RCD Mallorca and FC Cadiz stay in the league, while FC Granada are relegated.
