90.+9! Gomis converts the fourth penalty and redeems Galatasaray

Galatasaray Istanbul have claimed their first win of the year. In a 3-2 win over Göztepe Izmir, the decider came in the ninth minute of stoppage time.

Galatasaray Istanbul is not in a position to challenge for the title or the international places this season, and the Turkish record champions are currently in the bottom half of the table. In order not to fall into the relegation battle, the team of coach Domenec Torrent urgently needed a win against Göztepe Izmir – it should be the first of the year.

The visitors got off to a good start, with defender Nelsson giving them the lead after just three minutes. But “Cim Bom” was unable to follow up, and shortly before the break Ndiaye put a damper on things and equalised from the spot. With 20 minutes to go, the Senegalese player struck again from eleven metres – and even put Göztepe in the lead.

Galatasaray struggled to cope with the deficit but could rely on wildcard Gomis. The Frenchman came on after 74 minutes, 180 seconds before the end of normal time, the 36-year-old converted the third penalty kick of the evening to make it 2-2. But it was not to be the last penalty, in the ninth minute of injury time, referee Arda Kardesler again pointed to the spot. Again Gomis stepped up, again he scored – the 3-2 away win for Gala was perfect.
