Without Cristiano Ronaldo: ManUnited draws with Leicester

Manchester United could not get beyond a draw against Leicester City. Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence was noticeable in the Red Devils’ lacklustre 1-1 draw.

In order to bring top-flight football to Old Trafford next season, Manchester United need three points in almost every game as the season draws to a close. It did not help that superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was absent due to illness for the clash with Leicester. He was replaced by Bruno Fernandes in an attacking combination with Sancho, Pogba and youngster Elanga.

First, however, the Red Devils’ backline was called upon. Early on, Barnes announced the visitors with a header (2nd). The Foxes’ winger tried twice from distance a little later – again without success (11th, 12th). That was it for the time being in a game that rarely really entertained, let alone offered pace or intensity. It was not until the 27th minute that Bruno Fernandes came forward, but Schmeichel saved the best chance of the game. On the other side, Iheanacho (31st) and again Barnes (35th) missed.

After a goalless first half, both teams continued to struggle at the start of the second half. It was not until the 63rd minute that things really got dangerous – and the bell rang. Iheanacho headed home a cross from Maddison. However, the lead did not last long. After Bruno Fernandes’ shot and a save by Schmeichel, Fred dusted off the shot (66th).

Iheanacho missed the answer with his chip (71) and Fofana’s header was superbly saved by de Gea a minute later. Maddison’s shot to the short corner gave the Spanish goalkeeper no chance (80th). The only problem was that the supposed goal was disallowed after a VAR check. Iheanacho had fouled Varane in the process.

ManUnited struggled in vain in the closing minutes and were ultimately well served with the draw. The Red Devils have an away game at Everton on Saturday (13.30). Leicester already await PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday (9pm).
