“Mitro is on fire”: Mitrovic nabs goal record

Aleksandar Mitrovic has the next milestone in his pocket: the Fulham FC attacker scored against Peterborough United on Wednesday and now has the sole Championship record for most goals in a season in his pocket.

With his head, Aleksandar Mitrovic is scoring goals that will go down in history: After heading his country to the World Cup in the last minute against Portugal almost three months ago, the Serbian also equalled the league record for most goals in a Championship season with his head in a 1-0 win at Hull City on 12 February. It was the Fulham striker’s 31st goal of the season – only Ivan Toney had ever scored that many in Championship history.

However, the Brentford attacker only set this mark on the 46th and final matchday of last season. Mitrovic, on the other hand, had 16 games left after the Hull game to become the sole record holder. Given his quota, it seemed doubtful that the striker would need that many games – and then he didn’t,

Mitrovic has his sights set on promotion

Although Mitrovic came up empty in last Saturdays home game against Huddersfield Town (1-2), the time had now come. The 27-year-old scored his 32nd goal of the season against Peterborough United, converting a penalty kick to make it 1-0 (28th minute). In the 62nd minute he added the 33rd goal.

In Fulham, the song “Mitro is on fire” is often sung, especially when the brawny Serb scores – and in the current season he will certainly work on extending his record, especially since the Londoners need his goals to realise the big goal of promotion.

At the moment, things are looking good, the lead over third-placed Bournemouth is a whopping eleven points – and Fulham still have one more game in hand.
