In the early round of 16 games, Crailsheim kept the upper hand against Chemnitz 99ers and Bayreuth thanks to a 10:0 run against MBC. Ludwigsburg then went through to the next round against Hamburg. It was closer between Würzburg and Oldenburg, with the better end for the EWE Baskets.
The MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg are through to the quarter-finals of the Basketball Bundesliga Cup competition. On Saturday, the Swabians prevailed away against Veolia Towers Hamburg with 92:86 (43:44). Coach Josh King’s team confirmed their good early season form with their fourth win in their fifth competitive game.
The Hamburg team found its rhythm in the second quarter with some quick attacks, and in the third period the hosts were leading by double digits at times. Then the visitors’ defence stood up better: for almost seven minutes, Ludwigsburg did not allow any points from the field, and with a 14:2 start into the final period, they turned the game around. Ludwigsburg’s Isaiah Whitehead scored 14 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter.
Crailsheim turns up the heat against Chemnitz
Last year’s finalist is also through to the next round: Hakro Merlins Crailsheim defeated Niners Chemnitz 86-72 (40-37) at home. The hosts opened the second half with an 11:0 run and controlled the third period with 25:12. Crailsheim’s playmaker Edon Maxhuni hit five threes and was the top scorer of the game with 20 points.
Bayreuth’s 10:0 run
Thanks to a strong final phase, medi Bayreuth won 75:69 (37:43) against Syntainics MBC from Weißenfels. The visitors from Upper Franconia turned the game around with a 10:0 run in the last two minutes.
Oldenburg narrowly defeat Würzburg
In the fourth game of the first cup round, Tanner Leissner scored 24 points to lead EWE Baskets Oldenburg to a 91-87 (43-44) away win over Würzburg Baskets.
