Squad place denied? Martial contradicts Rangnick

Things have not been going well for Anthony Martial (26) at Manchester United for longer than they have for the Red Devils themselves. Now there seems to have been another low point in the saga.

His departure is only a matter of time, with Sevilla FC reportedly interested in Anthony Martial. However, should this process be accelerated – and with unfair means?

As Manchester United dropped their next points on Saturday – with an assist and a goal, Aston Villa’s new signing Philippe Coutinho overturned a 2-0 deficit – Martial (at the club since 2015), who was out injured in December, was again not even on the bench.

This time, however, coach Ralf Rangnick explained the move by saying that the Frenchman had flatly refused his squad place, despite United having a limited contingent available anyway: “He didn’t want to be in the squad, so he didn’t travel with us in the first place.”

Martial’s version of events sounded a little different. A few hours later, the attacker spoke out on Instagram, insisting he would “never turn down playing a game for Manchester United”. In seven years, he has “always respected the club and the fans” and will continue to do so.

Nevertheless, at least one loan move to Sevilla is on the horizon, which is currently stalled for financial reasons.
