Sinner Gets Off to a Strong Start in His Title Bid

The South Tyrolean had no trouble in his first match in Paris this year.

After just under two hours, Jannik Sinner had completed his first match: The dominant player from South Tyrol celebrated an unchallenged opening victory at the French Open. The world No. 1 defeated clear underdog Clément Tabur of France 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday evening.

Sinner has recently gone from success to success and traveled to Paris as the clear favorite to win the title. In 2025, it was Carlos Alcaraz who finally stopped him in an epic final—the Spaniard is out this year due to injury, which further boosts Sinner’s chances.

“It’s a very special tournament for me, and it gets better every year. ‘We were very close last year,’ the 24-year-old had said before his first match. Coming close is no longer enough for him. Sinner wants to complete his career Grand Slam—winning all four major tournaments.

He arrives with maximum confidence. In Rome, the Italian won his sixth Masters title in a row, following triumphs in Paris (2025) as well as Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, and Madrid this year.

According to the seedings, his first challenger at the French Open is Germany’s top player, Alexander Zverev, whom Sinner has confidently defeated on multiple occasions recently.
