Quincy Promes, who was sentenced to seven years in prison in two cases—appeals are still pending—is back in the Netherlands. He was extradited from the United Arab Emirates.
Quincy Promes has made headlines in the past not for his performances on the pitch, but for his actions off the field. In 2023, the Amsterdam Criminal Court initially sentenced him to 18 months in prison for aggravated assault. He is alleged to have stabbed his cousin in the leg with a knife at a family party in 2020.
Less than a year later, the court found Promes guilty again, this time for his involvement in drug trafficking. He and his accomplices are alleged to have smuggled more than 1,350 kilograms of cocaine through the port of Antwerp. In this case, the court handed down a six-year prison sentence. The 50-time Dutch international has appealed both verdicts.
Most recently played for United FC in the UAE second division
However, Promes did not serve his sentences for a long time. This was because he was under contract with Spartak Moscow during his convictions and was therefore in Russia. As there is no extradition agreement between the Netherlands and Russia, Promes could not be transferred.
However, the 33-year-old left Spartak last summer and moved to United FC in Dubai, a second division club. There is a limited extradition agreement with the United Arab Emirates, which the Dutch judiciary has now invoked. The professional footballer was extradited to the Netherlands by chartered plane after his arrest last week. According to the spokesperson for the public prosecutor’s office, the plane landed at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport shortly after 9:30 p.m.
Promes will be held in prison until the final verdicts in the appeal process. “The court has decided that the defendant is a flight risk,” said Attorney General Arend-Kees Kooij.
