Schröder will not travel to Sweden – Theis drops out

Captain Dennis Schröder will not travel with the German basketball team to the upcoming World Cup qualifier in Sweden on Sunday. This was announced by national coach Gordon Herbert at a press conference on Saturday evening in Hamburg.

Schröder, who missed the Supercup final against Serbia (56:83) due to an ankle injury, will not fly with the team for the time being, instead Niels Giffey, who was absent in Hamburg for private reasons, will join the team.

Schröder’s call-up for the European Championship dress rehearsal on Sunday next week in Munich against European champions Slovenia is apparently also in jeopardy. “He’s a tough kid, he wants to play,” said Herbert: “The best scenario would be if it was only three, four days. Time will tell. It’s difficult to speculate on that.” He said he might be able to say more on Tuesday.

Schröder doesn’t want to write off the two World Cup qualifying matches just yet. “I have to recover first. If I feel good, I’ll be at the start,” said the playmaker: “Otherwise, to the European Championship. I won’t miss out on that, let’s put it that way. “

Theis “out between seven and ten days “

Daniel Theis (knee), who is also injured, is not an issue for the last two games before the home European Championship (from 1 September). “He is out for between seven and ten days,” said Herbert. With a view to the European Championships, one has to see whether it is enough. “24 hours before the start of the tournament you have to name your twelve players, after that you can’t change. We have to be sure that the boys are healthy going into the tournament.”

No longer part of the European Championship squad is Karim Jallow. As the DBB announced after the Supercup final, the 27-year-old from ratiopharm Ulm will leave the team hotel on Sunday.
