Rodri replacement? ManCity also digs deep into its pockets for Nico

Manchester City have made their next expensive winter transfer. Nico comes from FC Porto and is supposed to fill the Rodri gap.

75 million for Omar Marmoush (from Eintracht Frankfurt), 40 million for Abdukodir Khusanov (from RC Lens) and 37 million for Vitor Reis (Palmeiras) – Manchester City has already spent over 150 million on winter signings by Deadline Day. Shortly before the transfer deadline, however, the Skyblues opened their wallets again and paid the €60 million release clause for FC Porto midfielder Nico.

“This is the perfect opportunity for me at this stage of my career. I’m 23 and I want to try my hand in England. There is no better club for me to do that than Manchester City,” said the new signing.

The Spaniard signed a contract in Manchester until 2029 on Monday and is expected to fill the gap in central midfield left by world footballer Rodri since his cruciate ligament injury. Although Rodri would like to make his comeback before the end of this season, the crisis-ridden Citizens still have a number of important games to play before then.

In these, Nico, trained in Barcelona and transferred to Porto for around eight million in 2023, is supposed to pull the strings in midfield. Most recently, Mateo Kovacic took on this role out of necessity, but was unable to convince in the long term. The reigning champions should not suffer another result like the 5-1 defeat at Arsenal on Sunday. The 1.88-meter-tall midfielder is expected to stabilize ManCity again with his qualities in front of the defense and in building up play.

Nico comes from Barcelona’s youth department “La Masia” and played 37 games for the Catalans’ first team, who secured a whopping 40 percent resale fee when he transferred to Porto.
