Premier League march through? Ipswich close in on Leicester after 6-0 win

Ipswich Town continue to live their dream of making it through to the Premier League: The Tractor Boys delivered the right response to the recent defeat in Cardiff and sent Danny Röhl’s Sheffield Wednesday home with a 6-0 win

Everyone on the island now understands that Ipswich Town are no ordinary promoted side. Coach Kieran McKenna’s side are closing in on leaders Leicester City after their thumping 6-0 home win over Sheffield Wednesday. Just one point separates the Tractor Boys from the Foxes, who will not play in the Championship this weekend due to their FA Cup tie with Chelsea (1.45pm on Sunday) and have a game in hand.

Ipswich, in particular, showed a remarkable reaction to their recent 2-1 defeat at Cardiff, which could not have been more unfortunate, conceding goals in the fifth and tenth minutes of stoppage time. Against Sheffield Wednesday, coached by Danny Röhl – former assistant to Hansi Flick at Bayern and with the DFB team – the home side started with great determination. After a quarter of an hour, Chelsea loanee Hutchinson broke the spell (15th), and Burgess and Broadhead followed suit before the break (37th, 45th +1).

Al-Hamadi shows no mercy

Despite the comfortable 3-0 lead, Ipswich wanted to offer their fans even more after the break, which is why Hutchinson had the first word again (48′). After the fourth goal, the hosts showed some mercy before joker Al-Hamadi – who arrived from AFC Wimbledon in January – left his mark. The Iraqi scored a brace in the space of ten minutes to secure a 6:0 victory

Ipswich now face tough challenges at Blackburn Rovers (March 29) and Norwich City (April 6), with Southampton, who are also in the top flight, coming to Portman Road (April 1). Sheffield and Röhl – second defeat in a row after four wins in a row – will have to get back on track quickly if they are to jump back above the line.
