Florentino Perez (77) has been elected president of Real Madrid for a further four years. An acquaintance from the Bundesliga is also a new member of the Real Madrid board.
The reigning Champions League winner announced the result of the board elections on Sunday evening. According to this, the five-member election committee met at exactly 8:01 p.m., and the meeting was already over by 8:30 p.m. Therefore, no election took place. The simple explanation: Perez had no opponent – as was the case in his previous three re-elections – and will thus remain at the helm of the Royal Family until 2029. By then, he would already be 81 years old.
Perez, a building contractor and former politician, was already president of Real from 2000 to 2006 and has been leading the club since 2009 in a second term of office. He was responsible for a total of seven Champions League victories and seven league titles. Most recently, he was the driving force behind the signing of Kylian Mbappé. He is also known as a co-founder of the quickly abandoned European Super League.
Garcia Sanz is moving up
Francisco Garcia Sanz is a new member of the management team at the Spanish top club. The Madrid-born manager was a member of the board of management at Volkswagen AG from 2001 to 2018 and also served as chairman of the supervisory board at Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg from 2009 to 2018. He is now one of four new faces on the board of the Spanish capital club.
The Real board has a total of 18 members, including Perez and four vice presidents. There is only one woman on the board.
