No contract yet, but: Alpine “very happy” with Mick Schumacher

Mick Schumacher made a good impression during his WEC test for Alpine – Bruno Famin can imagine a cooperation in 2024

Because Mick Schumacher is extremely unlikely to get a regular Formula 1 cockpit in 2024 either, a move by the German to Alpine in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) has been looming for some time now

A week ago Wednesday, Schumacher tested the Alpine A424_Beta for the first time in Jerez. Speaking at the Formula 1 weekend in Mexico, Bruno Famin explained, “Mick tested the car eight days ago in Jerez. We were very happy with its performance.”

Famin is not only team principal of the Alpine Formula 1 racing team, he is also responsible for the WEC program as vice president of Alpine Motorsport. He reveals they were pleased with “how [Mick] worked with the team at the Jerez test.”

“I think he was happy too. That means we can talk about doing something together next year,” Famin says. However: there is currently no contract with Schumacher.

The German himself told Sky a few days ago during the Formula 1 race in Austin: “When we leave here then, we’ll have another look at everything and hopefully we’ll have some options.”

The Alpine A424_Beta is an all-new LMDh car that is set to make its debut in the 2024 WEC season. The debut of the car will also mark Alpine’s return to the highest class in endurance racing.

The French are by no means a blank slate: Alpine already won the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans once in 1978 with the A442, in which Mick Schumacher could also compete in 2024.

Alpine certainly doesn’t seem to be averse to giving the 24-year-old a chance. Otherwise, Schumacher would be facing his second race-free season in a row in 2024.

This year, he is merely a Formula 1 substitute driver for Mercedes and is not taking part in any other racing series.
