Newcastle release controversial new kit

Newcastle United will be wearing a white and green shirt among other things in the new season – a piquant choice of colour.

In May there had already been first pictures, now the fears of many fans have been confirmed: Newcastle United’s new away kit is actually white and green and thus in the national colours of Saudi Arabia.

This raises questions because the Premier League club has been owned since October 2021 by a consortium of which Saudi Arabia’s public investment fund holds 80 per cent. The new owners had assured the Premier League at the time that there was no connection between the fund and the government of Saudi Arabia.

The fact that the jersey design is very similar to that of the Saudi Arabian national team is not mentioned by Newcastle in the description of the new outfit. Because a map of the city is indicated on the front of the jersey, it rather represents that “the club’s past, present and future are closely linked to this city”.

Saudi Arabia has been accused of numerous human rights violations for years. The change of ownership in autumn had therefore led to an outcry not only in the football world.
