From crash king to dominator: Will Marquez clinch the title in Misano?

Marc Marquez has drastically reduced his crash rate compared to last year – the figures confirm his strong adaptation to the Ducati

Marc Marquez has never made a secret of the fact that his “instinct” pushes him to the limit almost every time he’s on the track. This tendency has made him one of the riders with the most crashes over many years. This season, however, something has changed.

In his second year on a Ducati and his first in the official factory team, the Spaniard has found significantly more stability. Ahead of the 15th race of the season this coming weekend in Montmelo, Marquez has recorded nine crashes.

That’s less than half of the 19 he had accumulated at this point last year, in his debut season with Gresini on the Desmosedici. Those 19 crashes, after the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, put him at the top of the crash statistics alongside rookie Pedro Acosta.

The Ducati riders’ crash statistics so far

In 2025, the picture is very different. Ten riders have already crashed more often than Marquez this season. Among the six Ducati riders, Alex Marquez and Franco Morbidelli (14 each) and Fermin Aldeguer (10) have crashed more often.

In contrast, Francesco Bagnaia (6) and Fabio Di Giannantonio (3) have crashed less than Marquez. He himself recently completed two race weekends in a row, namely Austria and Hungary, without a single crash.

His last incident occurred in Brno before the summer break in Q2, which cost him pole position. However, he made up for it with a double victory.

Even if Marquez were to hit a rough patch now, it is highly unlikely that he would reach the 19 crashes of 2024, let alone the 29 of the 2023 season, which led him to terminate his Honda contract early.

His dominance is also evident elsewhere: Marquez has scored ten double wins out of a possible 14 weekends this season, along with eight pole positions and eleven front row starts. These figures, combined with a 175-point lead, underline his superiority just as much as the crash statistics.

If his lead grows to 185 points after the Catalan Grand Prix, Marquez would have the chance to secure his seventh MotoGP title in Misano, six races before the end of the season. A thought that he himself dismisses.

Match point in Misano? Here’s what Marc Marquez has to say

“Of course, I would like to have match point as soon as possible, but ‘as soon as possible’ does not mean that I have to act hastily or with exaggerated ambition. I just have to maintain the same character and profile as in the last four races,” emphasizes the championship leader.

“I will try to fight for victory in every race, but if it doesn’t work out, we’ll see what happens. It doesn’t matter when – the important thing is that we achieve it.“

Marquez expresses a similar sentiment about the 100 Grand Prix wins mark, which he could also break at Misano: ”Of course, I would like to reach 100 wins, and I believe that if we continue as we have been doing, we will achieve that.”

“But I’ve never been obsessed with numbers. I’m obsessed with winning – no matter how often, when or where. Yes, I want to win more races, but championships are the most important thing. And in the second half of the season, I can’t make the mistake of just wanting to win every race. The main goal is the title.“

”Those of us who worked with Marc knew that after the summer he would be even more consistent than in the first half of the season. He always tends to think he’s not as superior as he actually is. Now he’s convinced himself, and that has made him calmer and even more reliable.”

“When you watch him ride, you can see that he has a lot of room for improvement. Anyone who doubted that he could win with the best bike simply didn’t know what he was capable of. Now they probably know.”
