Toto Wolff is experiencing motorsports from a new perspective through his son Jack—the Mercedes team principal talks about ambition, pressure, and finding the right balance
As Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolff has been synonymous with intense pressure to perform for years. As the father of his nine-year-old son Jack, however, the Austrian is learning to balance ambition with the joy of motorsports.
Jack Wolff competes in the IAME Karting Series and leads the championship following his most recent race victory in Italy. For his father, karting offers a direct look at the fundamentals of motorsports:
“This is where it all begins. Formula 1 is basically this on steroids,” Wolff explains at the racetrack. “It’s the same kind of racing, and watching the kids is just a great experience.”
Toto Wolff Wants to Limit the Pressure on His Son Jack
But as his success on the track grows, so does the pressure. When asked if he feels the pressure of the championship, Jack simply replied in a joint interview: “Yes.” For Wolff, this is a difficult situation. As a father, he is emotionally invested, yet at the same time, he is well aware of the demands that come with racing.
That’s why it’s especially important to find the right balance with a nine-year-old child. “It’s important to find the right balance, because as a parent you’re naturally emotionally involved, and that’s completely normal,” says Wolff. “But he’s nine years old—there are so many young children—and you have to strike the right balance, which is what we’re trying to do.”
The Mercedes team principal also acknowledged that he and his family don’t always strike the perfect balance. “Sometimes we get it wrong. There are difficult moments, and he had a few difficult moments today, but in the end, everything falls into place, and every little setback is a lesson for the future,” explains Wolff.
Wolff with a Clear Message for Karting Parents
Precisely because he himself has been involved in professional motorsports for years, Wolff is likely familiar with the temptation to push athletic development as consistently as possible from an early age. With his son, however, he clearly wants to avoid letting the pressure to perform overshadow the fun of racing.
When asked what advice he would give to other parents whose children are working their way through the competitive junior karting classes, Wolff therefore had a simple answer: “Just give them time. They’re so young—let them enjoy karting, and that’s the most important thing.”
For Wolff, the question of whether Jack will one day become a professional race car driver is not the main focus at this point. What matters most, he says, is that his son retains his joy in motorsports and learns from his experiences in karting.
