Brest Honors Roy’s Last Wish: Lacheur Takes Over

Ten days ago, Eric Roy lost his battle with cancer. Stade Brest was in shock, but is now looking ahead and has announced the successor to the successful coach. Roy’s last wish was honored.

Eric Roy lost his long battle with pancreatic cancer on June 17, 2026, at the age of 58; the successor to the late, successful coach was introduced at Stade Brest on Saturday. This was Roy’s preferred choice—he wanted his assistant coach, Julien Lachuer, to take over for him.

Lachuer was named head coach by the French first-division club, which Roy had coached until the very end despite his illness and led to 12th place in the 2025–26 season. The 49-year-old signed a contract through June 30, 2028, as the club announced just a few days before the start of preseason training, scheduled for this coming Thursday.

The new coach has been with Stade Brest since 2005. He initially played as a goalkeeper until 2010, before working as a goalkeeper coach and then serving as assistant coach under Roy starting in January 2023. Lacheur holds a coaching license in France and is therefore qualified “to master this challenge at the helm of the professional squad.”

Coaching staff remains unchanged

The entire coaching staff that previously worked under Roy will remain at his side. The goal remains the same: to secure another season in Ligue 1. That is likely what Roy would have wanted as well.
