After three years with Inter Milan, Yann Sommer will leave the Nerazzurri when his contract expires. Club Brugge is currently emerging as a possible new destination for the former Swiss national team goalkeeper.
Yann Sommer played in goal for Inter Milan in 139 matches, keeping a clean sheet in 66 of them. In the Champions League, the former Swiss national team goalkeeper repeatedly demonstrated his skills on Europe’s biggest stage. The major highlight was, of course, reaching the 2025 Champions League final. Along the way, Sommer recorded seven shutouts. His contract in Milan is now set to expire at the end of the season on June 30, 2026.
However, the 37-year-old has no plans to retire. After stints with Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayern Munich, and most recently Inter Milan, a fourth stop in a top European league is likely on the horizon. With the two German teams mentioned, Sommer played a total of 291 Bundesliga matches. The goalkeeper’s future, however, is likely to lie either in the Eredivisie or the Jupiler Pro League.
Mignolet’s Successor
Two weeks ago, rumors surfaced about a possible move by Sommer to Ajax Amsterdam. The starting goalkeeper position at the Dutch club will become vacant when Vitezslav Jaros returns from his loan to Liverpool FC. In the meantime, a new lead points to Bruges. Both Het Laatste Nieuws and transfer expert Sacha Tavolieri report that Club Brugge is in talks with Sommer. At the Belgian champions, Sommer would succeed Simon Mignolet, who is set to retire.
Regardless of whether he ends up in Amsterdam or Brugge, Sommer would have the opportunity to further expand his already impressive track record. After winning four league titles and two cup titles with FC Basel, the goalkeeper was crowned German champion with Bayern Munich in 2023. In Italy, Sommer most recently won the double with Inter Milan. As early as the 2023–24 season, he celebrated winning the Italian league title and the “Supercoppa Italiana.”
