Coventry City are the first club to be promoted to the Premier League. After 25 years, Frank Lampard led the club back into England’s top flight in style.
The Premier League, which was introduced in 1992, has had one of its founding members back since Friday evening: Coventry City’s return to England’s top flight was secured with a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers thanks to a header from Bobby Thomas shortly before the end – with over 7,000 visiting fans in attendance. The 1987 FA Cup winners, the greatest success in the club’s history to date, are a highly deserving promotion contender who have borne the clear signature of Frank Lampard since November 2024.
Coventry quickly became the number one promotion contenders under the former world-class midfielder this season and, as the relentless 46 matchdays in the Championship demand, they have followed this path to the letter. From matchday 9 onwards, Lampard’s team was virtually uninterrupted at the top of the table – except on matchday 31.
Coventry always found the right balance between defense and offense. The 85 goals scored are by far the best in the second division, with Ipswich Town and FC Middlesbrough the only two teams to concede fewer.
One of the guarantors of promotion, which should soon be crowned with the championship, is Haji Wright. The US striker, who played in Germany for Schalke (seven Bundesliga appearances, one goal) and SV Sandhausen (15 second division games, one goal), is his team’s top scorer with 16 goals in 37 Championship games to date. Only Swansea striker Zan Vipotnik (21 in 40) surpasses this figure in the league.
Klassenerhalt – but “the Cov way”?
For the Sky Blue Army, the fans of Coventry City, the return to the Premier League is a kind of redemption. After being relegated from the top flight, Coventry’s unreasonableness took them down to League 4, which the club left immediately after the 2017/18 season.
Owner Doug King announced weeks ago that he wanted to return to the Premier League “the Cov way” after 25 years. A skeleton of the team is to be retained and only selectively strengthened. “Sunderland changed their entire starting eleven, which was pretty radical,” said King about the promoted side from the previous season, who are currently 10th in the Premier League with their approach. However, Coventry want to do things differently.
5000 fans are likely to be particularly excited about their Premier League return: they will experience their first season in the top flight with a free (!) season ticket. Before his first full season as owner, King had published a special offer in May 2023. Coventry fans were able to secure a season ticket for five years at a fixed price – with the chance of a free season ticket if the club was promoted to the Premier League during this period.
