Alexander Zverev is fully focused on the final in Paris—and will not compete in Stuttgart.
After reaching the French Open final, Alexander Zverev will not participate in the ATP tournament at Stuttgart’s Weissenhof. The organizers announced this on Friday following the Hamburg native’s 7-5, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory in Paris against Jakub Mensik. The 20-year-old Czech player, as well as Zverev’s Italian final opponent Flavio Cobolli, will also not be competing.
“It is only too understandable and reasonable that Alexander Zverev is now focusing all his attention on the French Open. We wish him all the best for the final in Paris and are keeping our fingers crossed for him,” said tournament director Edwin Weindorfer.
“A victory for Sascha at Roland Garros would give German tennis a huge boost, so we’ll be closely following the action in France on Sunday.”
Zverev lost last year’s final of the grass-court tournament to American Taylor Fritz. The defending champion is back again this year, while the seedings for the 250-level tournament are led by his compatriot and world No. 5 Ben Shelton.
Following changes to the entry list, four German players—Yannick Hanfmann, Daniel Altmaier, Jan-Lennard Struff, and last year’s quarterfinalist Justin Engel—are in the main draw. The first round in Stuttgart begins on Monday.
