WRC: Sebastien Ogier Says He Needs to Beat Neuville and Tanak for Title Streak

After his disastrous crash in Turkey, Sebastien Ogier has found himself in third place in the WRC leaderboard standings, behind Thierry Neuville and Ott Tanak. Ogier currently has five championships to his name, which is second in the record books to Sebastien Loeb who holds nine.

Ogier has won five WRC championships in a row

Ogier has won the last five titles but the chances of him continuing his hot streak to claim six in a row will be slim if he does not get the right results at the Rally GB this week. Last year’s Wales Rally was a great occasion for M-Sport as Ogier and Ingrassia became the first drivers’ and co-drivers’ world title winners for the team.

Neuville leads in the standings

This year Neuville’s Hyundai i30 N has been just too strong for the competition, as he has picked up 177 points, with Tanak getting 164 and Ogier currently on 154 points. Ogier has won three races this year but he has missed out on more podium finishes than last year. Ogier recently reflected on his current placing:

“We’re not missing the wins, it’s the consistency and the podiums that we’ve been missing – there’s a couple of reasons for that. We have had some bad luck, to be honest. But that’s racing. I have done some mistakes, but I feel I paid a lot for these mistakes. Many times in my career I have had luck with me, but now I am missing some of that. But also I think you can make your own luck and I need to do that in the last three rallies.”

Ogier confident he can still win championship

Despite feeling that luck is not on his side this year, he has not written off his chances of pulling it back, starting with Rally GB: “The championship is still possible. Of course, we are not in the best position at the moment, but with 90 points still available and being 23 behind, it’s definitely not lost.”
