Manchester City narrowly lost the top-of-the-table clash against Brighton & Hove Albion 0–1. The Seagulls defended their early lead passionately, whilst City time and again came up against a Verbruggen in superb form.
In this Premier League top-of-the-table clash, league leaders Manchester City hosted third-placed Brighton & Hove Albion. Following their clash in the League Cup round of 16 (a 4–3 win for City on penalties), this was the second meeting between the two sides in the space of a few days.
Enzo Maresca rotated his squad extensively for the top-of-the-table clash, making no fewer than nine changes to his starting line-up. Among others, Donnarumma and Haaland returned. Fabian Hürzeler also rotated his squad, making changes to six positions. Groß started as usual and formed the central midfield partnership with former Stuttgart player Chema.
Ayari puts Brighton ahead – Haaland’s shot blocked
In Manchester, the home side got off to the better start. Costinha blocked Doku’s shot at the last moment (8’). Three minutes later, Brighton struck with clinical precision. Ayari put the league’s top attack (24 goals) ahead from close range. The visitors then defended their lead with discipline and looked to capitalise on counter-attacks, whilst City struggled to create clear-cut chances in the final third.
It took a good 20 minutes before things got really dangerous. First, Ndiaye headed just wide of the far post (22’); three minutes later, his powerful shot from a tight angle was saved by Verbruggen. After conceding the opening goal, Hürzeler’s side created hardly anything in attack. The home side therefore dictated the play, but were unable to equalise before half-time. Haaland had the best chance, but Dunk blocked the Norwegian’s shot from a position slightly to the left (42).
De Cuyper misses chance to make it 2–0 – City frustrated by Verbruggen
After the break, de Cuyper missed the chance to double the Seagulls’ lead. The Belgian first sent a pass from Ayari over the bar whilst unmarked (48’) and then tested Donnarumma with a header following a cross from Groß (54’).
And City? The league leaders had a chance to equalise through Ndiaye. The striker’s powerful shot from 14 metres was denied by Verbruggen, who tipped the ball onto the post (52′). The goalkeeper did not need to intervene when Fernandez fired in a low shot (58′). Yet the Dutchman remained in the spotlight. With a superb save from Matheus Nunes, he preserved Brighton’s lead (62′).
It was not until the closing stages that Man City posed a threat again against the Seagulls, who were defending with great determination. Ndiaye fired over the bar from a tight angle with a clear shot (76’). As Verbruggen was also on hand to deny Khusanov (89’) and Doku (90’+4), Brighton won the top-of-the-table clash at Man City and closed the gap to just two points behind the Sky Blues, who, for their part, must now worry about their position at the top of the table.
City’s next fixture is on Wednesday (9.00 pm) in the Champions League, when the Sky Blues travel to face RB Leipzig. Brighton face FC Getafe in the Conference League at the same time the following day.
