Will Buxton: Netflix cult reporter leaves Formula 1

Formula 1 reporter Will Buxton will leave the Formula 1 paddock and focus on the IndyCar series from 2025 – Netflix sayings achieved cult status

Formula 1 will lose a well-known figurehead before the 2025 season. Presenter Will Buxton will leave the premier class and instead devote himself to covering the IndyCar series for the American television channel Fox Sports.

The 43-year-old may not be a familiar face to every casual fan in Germany, but he has also achieved cult status among many through his appearances in the Netflix documentary “Drive to Survive”.

He has been a permanent member of the team there for several years and is celebrated on the internet for his sayings, which mostly emphasize the obvious. For example: “If you come first in Formula 1, you win the race.” Or: “You want to start first because then you have the 19 other drivers behind you.”

If you’ve watched Formula 1 races in English on F1TV, you’ve probably heard Buxton’s voice there as well. He has been working there as a commentator and reporter in various formats since 2018, having previously covered Formula 1 for the American broadcaster NBC Sports for several years.

But now the Englishman is closing this chapter: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at F1TV for seven incredibly happy years,” he writes on Instagram. “I am so proud of everything we have created and built, and I look forward to watching the development from 2025 – admittedly, at least for now, from my couch.”

Instead, he will now switch to the IndyCar series: “I have always loved the Indycar racing series, always been thrilled by the exciting races and amazed by the skills of the incredible drivers,” he writes.

“And while I always hoped that I would be a part of it one day, I never imagined that I would ever have the opportunity to compete in the series full-time. It is a great honor that I can now do so in the role and with the responsibility that I have in 2025,” said Buxton.

He himself had once started out as an editor in the Formula 1 sector and in 2005 became the press officer of the then newly founded GP2 Series, before later commentating on it on TV and thus getting started as a commentator.

“Racing is my life. My deepest passion. Its drivers are my heroes. I have been incredibly lucky to have a job for the last two decades that has been about telling their stories,” he says.

“And furthermore, a job that I believe has always been about taking fans on a journey into the heart of the racing world, whether on the side or on the screen. It’s about making them a part of the sport they love. That was and always will be the reason I do what I do.”
