Valencia FC facing collapse? Authorities demand completion of new stadium

Construction work on the new stadium of FC Valenciahas been at a standstill since 2009. The authorities are now increasing the pressure on the heavily indebted traditional club.

It is not a pretty spot in the cityscape of Valencia. Since 2009, work has been at a standstill on the Nou Mestalla, which was supposed to be the venue of six-time Spanish champions Valencia FC and, at best, hold 55,000 fans

However, the already heavily indebted club is now threatened with financial collapse. The responsible building and financial authorities in the region have ordered the traditional club to submit a financial plan for completion within 90 days. This is what Spanish media report unanimously.

Valencia FC has 400 million euros in debts, 212 of which are reportedly to be settled in the short term. In the past season alone, 31.2 were newly added. Most recently, the club had received 51 million eurosfrom the Rights and Media Funding Limited (RMFL) company to be able to cover running costs.

Four kilometres away from the old stadium

The construction of the arena, which is a good four kilometres away from the “old” Mestalla, had begun in 2007. Since 25 February 2009, it has not progressed due to financial problems.

Before this weekend’s away game at surprise league leaders Real Sociedad, “Los Che” are currently in tenth place in La Liga. The last time Valencia FC won the championship was in the 2003/04 season. In 2000 and 2001, Valencia FC reached the final of the Champions League, but lost to both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich the following year.
