That Was the World Cup Night—and Here’s What’s Next Today

What did you miss last night? And what’s on the schedule for today? Our daily compact overview—this time featuring a few doubleheaders, a long-distance goal-scoring duel, and dangerous corner kicks.

Mbappé and Co. Unstoppable Even by the Storm

After Messi broke the all-time World Cup scoring record with two goals against Austria, Mbappé quickly followed suit with his 15th goal of the tournament against Iraq. The Real Madrid forward then scored France’s second goal, tying Klose’s record. Interestingly, nearly three hours passed between his two goals in the 14th and 54th minutes. The match in Philadelphia was briefly suspended for a long time after the first half due to a storm. Dembelé sealed the deal after about an hour of play, following a strong assist from Olise—and thus secured France’s spot in the knockout stage once and for all.

Haaland’s Brace Leads Norway

With his two goals, Mbappé moved up in the tournament’s scoring standings behind Messi, who leads with five goals. After the Norway vs. Senegal match, the list gained an illustrious new addition, as Haaland also scored twice—his third and fourth goals of the tournament. But it was Pedersen who opened the scoring for the Vikings; he had come on for Ryerson, who was substituted early due to injury, and coolly capitalized on a costly mistake by Koulibaly.

In the second half, it was Haaland time: First, he coolly finished off a beautiful pass from Ödegaard past Mendy, then he responded to Sarr’s temporary goal with a strike from his weaker left foot to make it 3–1. Senegal closed the gap again in stoppage time with Sarr’s second goal, but in the end, they suffered their second defeat. Norway, on the other hand, can now look ahead to the knockout stage, while the Lions of Teranga are concerned about goalkeeper Mendy, who was injured during the 1–3 loss and had to be substituted.

Corners Secure Victory for Algeria

For nearly 70 minutes, Jordan came close to its first World Cup victory, but then substitute Benbouali struck for Algeria, heading a corner kick from Mahrez into the net. In the closing stages, another Algerian corner even sealed the 2-1 final score. This time, substitute Hadj Moussa took the corner; after a deflection, Gouiri slotted it home from close range. Prior to that, Jordan had created more scoring chances, especially in the first half. In the 36th minute, Al-Rashdan managed to do what Al-Taamari had failed to do just a split second earlier due to a lapse in concentration: put Jordan up 1–0. Before Algeria’s corner kicks had any effect.

Here’s what today’s World Cup action brings—and what’s next for Germany

The action continues on Monday at 7 p.m. Central European Summer Time. Portugal hopes to put its weak tournament start (a 1-1 draw against the DR Congo) behind it against Uzbekistan. Later in the evening, England faces Ghana (10 p.m.), and overnight, Croatia takes on Panama (1 a.m.). In the early morning hours (4 a.m.), Colombia aims for its second win against the DR Congo.

And what about the German national team? On Tuesday, ahead of their final group stage match against Ecuador in East Rutherford (Thursday, 10 p.m.), they’re scheduled to train at 11 a.m. local time (5 p.m. CEST). A press conference is also scheduled again; this time, Jamie Leweling will take questions (7:45 p.m. CEST).
