A few days ago, Tottenham were knocked out of the League Cup by a 4-0 defeat at Liverpool. Now the Spurs have also failed in the FA Cup – even though new signing Tel scored his first goal against Aston Villa.
Things aren’t going well for the Spurs at the national level at the moment. In the Premier League, the Londoners are lagging behind their own expectations, only in 14th place after 24 games, which is why the pressure on head coach Ange Postecoglou has grown in recent days. The Australian was able to collect arguments by winning the Europa League and a 2-0 victory against Brentford.
But then came the crushing League Cup exit in the semi-final second leg against Liverpool (0-4) despite 1-0 in the first leg. And now a disappointing performance in the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, which sealed the exit in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
The start of the game, in which Bayern loanee Mathys Tel started for the first time, was symbolic: Not even a minute had been played when the visitors from North London were already behind. Because they showed gaping holes in defense, because Morgan Rogers recognized them , because Jacob Ramsey punished his cross with a powerful shot – and because substitute keeper Antonin Kinsky did not cut a good figure (1st).
Son misses equalizer – Tel scores late
It was a bitter moment for the Czech: He made several spectacular saves as the game progressed, while on the opposite side, Heung-Min Son missed a great opportunity to equalize in front of the equally impressive Emiliano Martinez.
Kinsky was finally powerless after a little over an hour when Pedro Porro saved with his last ounce of strength for his beaten keeper in front of the line, but thus involuntarily provided the assist for Rogers, who only had to dust off the ball to make it 2-0 (64′).
Now was time for Marcus Rashford, who Aston Villa has loaned from Manchester United and who is now playing for another club in a competitive game for the first time in his professional career. In the 24 minutes, the 27-year-old was indeed able to make an impact, but Tel, on loan from Bayern, marked the opposite. The Frenchman converted a spirited cross from Dejan Kulusevski to score a late 2-1 goal (90.+1). However, his first goal for the English side could not prevent his club from being knocked out.
