Sturm knocks out Blindert

In just three rounds, the opponent goes down a total of four times, with Felix Sturm hardly challenged at all in his comeback.

Former boxing world champion Felix Sturm celebrated the hoped-for victory at his comeback and underlined his claim to a last chance at the world championship. On Saturday in Neu-Ulm, the now 46-year-old Leverkusen native defeated the outmatched Benjamin Blindert from Euskirchen by knockout in the third round. For the five-time champion Sturm, it was the 45th victory in 54 professional fights (six defeats, three draws).

“We will meet again soon, with my sixth world title,” said Sturm after the fight in the ring. He said they would ‘not rush’ and see ‘what is feasible in the next four to six months.’ That was a fight that didn’t cost much substance. The icing on the cake for me would be to win a sixth world title for my daughter and son.”

First of all, he secured the subordinate gold title of the WBA. Sturm returned to the ring for the first time since December 2023 with the light heavyweight fight against Blindert (38). It was a short and one-sided fight. Again and again, the ex-champion involved his opponent in in-fights, in which he was clearly superior. Blindert went down once in the first round, and in the second he fell into the ropes. In round three, Blindert was on the floor two more times, and after the fourth knockdown, the referee saw fit to declare Sturm the winner.

For Sturm, it was a confirmation at a modest level. After a turbulent few years, during which he had to serve a prison sentence for tax evasion and violating the anti-doping law, he had recently announced that he wanted to aim for his sixth world title in the autumn of his career.
