“Stupid”: Reus complains about performance in Leipzig

When Dortmund’s Marco Reus scored to make it 1-1 in Leipzig, he at least brought his colours back and raised hopes of at least a point. But the captain didn’t really care about that afterwards.

Even though BVB are currently missing a number of regulars – first and foremost, of course, top scorer Erling Haaland (hip flexor injury) – and even though goalkeeper Gregor Kobel briefly cited the lack of personnel after the 1-2 defeat in Leipzig as one of the reasons, the keeper was aware, as was Marco Reus, that this explanation alone was not enough.

All in all, the Westphalians’ performance against the runners-up was simply too harmless. Professionals like Donyell Malen (eleventh first league appearance), Julian Brandt and even Reus himself regularly bounced off the stable RB defence, which had itself been somewhat shaken at the start (Willi Orban, Lukas Klostermann, Marcel Halstenberg were absent). Not surprisingly, the words of Kobel and Reus were clear shortly after the final whistle when talking to “Sky”.

Critical tones with critical expressions

“Of course it’s crap, that’s quite clear,” Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel started his analysis. “Especially in the first half it was nothing today. We didn’t play a good game, of course. We are sloppy.” Captain Reus saw it similarly, only choosing even more drastic words: “You can forget the first half right away, in the second we switched to a four-man defence, which suits us much better.” But the 1:2 was a “stupid” goal against. “It was a deserved defeat, all the more bitter that it came about like that,” Reus concluded. “But Leipzig could have scored even more goals.” That’s how honest you have to be, he said.

I don’t give a shit about the goal.

Meanwhile, the 32-year-old  DFB international didn’t care about his own beautifully played goal to make it 1-1 in the meantime: “I don’t give a shit about the goal. I’m much more upset that we lost,” he complained. “We simply didn’t manage to be on a par. In the aggressiveness, in the opening of the game. Overall, it was too little.” But the offensive man is not disillusioned about that, he assured. His statements were rather “the truth. We simply didn’t deserve it. “

Rose is enjoying the break

Borussia coach Marco Rose did not contradict his charges, with the 45-year-old saying: “We don’t need to open a can of worms now and it’s not as if we’ve lost seven away games in a row. But I know that people are talking about the second defeat in a row. But we’re looking at the big picture and just looking forward to getting some players back after the international break, which will be good for us.” Kobel also agreed: “We will use the time very well. We are still a super, super strong team. We just have to bring that on the pitch.”
