Sony buys developer studio Bungie for 3.6 billion US dollars

After the historic acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft, comes the next billion dollar deal. Sony buys developer studio Bungie. Will games like Destiny be PlayStation exclusive in the future?

The titans of the console market strike again. After Microsoft put almost 70 billion US dollars on the table a few weeks ago to buy out Activision Blizzard, the consolidation of the video game market continues – but this time thanks to competition from the house of Sony.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has struck a deal with popular developer Bungie, with the console maker set to take over the studio. Best known for the iconic shooter series Halo or the MMO title Destiny. The acquisition is said to have been completed for $3.6 billion, according to Sony.

“We will continue to publish our games independently “

The international tech giant has thus paid quite a bit for the services of the experienced studio. The question of whether games from the US company will be published exclusively for PlayStation in the future is being answered in the negative for the time being.

Bungie says: “We will continue to publish and develop our games independently.” Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, also emphasises a similar intention: “First of all, I want to make it clear to the community that Bungie will remain an independent multiplatform developer and publisher.”

After the acquisition of Bethesda and the high-profile deal between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard, now comes a response on the part of the Japanese company. With Bungie in its portfolio, Sony seems strongly equipped for the future.
