Schnörkellos Augsburger inflict Bayern second defeat of the season

The FC Bayern München suffered its second defeat of the season in Augsburg. An aggressive and, above all, no-frills FCA made the record champion’s offensive despair.

Positive Corona tests (Süle and Stanisic), quarantine (Kimmich) and “extremely little training time “ – Julian Nagelsmann and FC Bayern had a difficult international break. Things also got off to a difficult start against FC Augsburg. The Fuggerstädter put the Bavarians, who had Richards, Pavard, Gnabry and Sabitzer playing for Süle, Kimmich, Coman (muscular problems) and Davies compared to the 2-1 home win against SC Freiburg, under pressure early on with aggressive play.

The record champions struggled to find a gap in Augsburg’s defence in the early stages – only Richards had a harmless chance to shoot (7th).

Pedersen with a full-stretch shot into the goal

The Augsburg approach was more straightforward. Although FCA also had to cope with some absences – after the 0:1 in Wolfsburg, Iago, Hahn and Dorsch started for Vargas (COVID-19), Finnbogason (muscular problems) and Strobl (cruciate ligament tear) – they showed more determination from the start. From a secure defensive position, the goal was to move forward quickly – and it worked after just 23 minutes: On the left, Iago made a sharp pass into the middle, Pedersen slammed the rebound into the right corner to take the lead.

After the goal, FCA did not change their game – neither did Bayern, but they continued to lack the necessary accuracy. In addition, mistakes also crept in for the record champions. Sabitzer lost a ball in the build-up to Zeqiri and then it was quick again: Iago crossed inside where Hahn headed in to make it 2:0 (35.).

Lewandowski counters immediately

Now Bayern were fired up and promptly struck back. Lewandowski converted a hooked forward pass from Müller to tie the game up (38th).

All too often, however, the record champions were unable to break down the many-legged FCA defence, where an Augsburg player was always in between or even

threw himself. The home side themselves then created danger in the penalty area: Gumny unintentionally crossed the ball with his chest for Lewandowski, who volleyed the ball across the box (50th minute).

Augsburg closes down

Weinzierl switched to a defensive five-man backline and the record champions found it even more difficult despite having around 80 per cent of the ball – and time was also running out, with the Munich side rarely getting a decisive lead in front of Gikiewicz’s goal. The substitute Davies (73rd) and Lewandowski (80th) tried again, but in the end it was the second defeat of the season for the Munich team – for Müller (600th match for the FCB) and Neuer (450th Bundesliga match) no nice anniversaries.
