Saxony closes down: Ghost games again for Leipzig, Dresden and Aue

The state government in Saxony decided on Friday, among other things, that no spectators will be allowed into the stadium for professional sports because of the rapidly increasing Corona numbers.

This also affects Bundesliga team Leipzig, which will have to play ghost matches again. RB confirmed this at the request of the SID. The new regulations also have serious consequences for the second-division clubs Dynamo Dresden and Erzgebirge Aue.

With the new measures, which will initially apply until 12 December, Saxony is reacting to the enormous increase in infections in the Free State. According to the Robert Koch Institute, the seven-day incidence was recently just under 594, one of the highest in Germany. At the same time, the vaccination rate for second vaccinations is the lowest in the country at just under 58 per cent.

According to the report, Leipzig will have to play in front of empty stands in the Bundesliga against Bayer Leverkusen on 28 November and against Borussia Mönchengladbach on 11 December, as well as in the Champions League against Manchester City on 7 December.

Leipzig handballers also affected

Dresden will still be allowed to play their home match against Düsseldorf on Sunday in front of spectators, but not the one against Karlsruher SC on 5 December. For Aue it concerns two home games, the one against Darmstadt on 27 November – and of all things the derby against Dynamo on 12 December. The Bundesliga handball players from SC DHfK Leipzig will also have to play ghost games.

In Bavaria, affected by similarly high incidences, the state government had previously reduced the capacity utilisation of stadiums and halls at sporting events to “a maximum of 25 per cent “ The measures are to be passed in the state parliament on Tuesday and will be in effect until 15 December.
