SAP Garden in Munich will not be ready until 2024

A setback for the sports city of Munich: The new home venue for the Bayern basketball team and EHC Red Bull will not be ready until much later than originally planned

The Bayern basket players and the ice hockey cracks of EHC Red Bull will have to wait longer for their new home venue than planned. As “Red Bull Stadion München GmbH” announced on Friday, the construction of the SAP Garden in the Olympic Park has been delayed due to “acute shortages of construction and raw materials, delivery bottlenecks and a shortage of skilled workers”. Completion of the multifunctional sports arena is now targeted for spring 2024.

Second delay – European Handball Championship without Munich

Originally, the SAP Garden, which is to seat up to 12,500 spectators, was to be opened in the second half of 2022. Due to “impairments” caused by the Corona pandemic, the forecast for completion was then already postponed to the end of 2023.

The arena is to serve DEL club Red Bull München as a new venue, the runner-up is moving out of the outdated Olympia Ice Stadium. The Bavarian basketball team wants to use the SAP Garden as an additional venue next to the Audi Dome. The arena was actually supposed to be one of six venues at the 2024 European Men’s Handball Championships (12 to 28 January 2024) – but nothing will come of that now. As the DHB announced, they are now looking for an alternative venue.
