Jonas Valanciunas was just signed by the Nuggets, but now reports are circulating that the center has received a lucrative offer from Europe. Is a quick departure looming before he even plays for Denver?
The Denver Nuggets had just decided to add more depth to their frontcourt, but now that plan is already threatening to fall apart. According to consistent media reports, Jonas Valanciunas is flirting with a move to Europe. The Lithuanian center is said to have a three-year contract with 2024 EuroLeague champions Panathinaikos Athens.
Panathinaikos tempts with money and role
Where could this sudden change of heart come from? In addition to the financial aspect, the role at Panathinaikos is likely to be a decisive factor. The Greek top club wants to attack the EuroLeague title with Valanciunas as a central building block.
However, the deal would also be financially lucrative: Valanciunas is set to earn around €12 million over three years. Tax-free, of course. By way of comparison, the 33-year-old has signed a contract worth $10.4 million with the Nuggets, but only for the coming season. After that, there is a team option for $10 million for another season.
Not a game for Denver?
It would be particularly bitter from the Nuggets’ point of view: Valanciunas was only recently acquired from Sacramento in a trade. In exchange for Dario Saric, the experienced big man was supposed to take on a central role in Denver as backup for Nikola Jokic. With stints in Toronto, Memphis, New Orleans, Washington, and Sacramento, the 2.11-meter man brings a wealth of NBA experience to the table. In other words, exactly what Denver was looking for in its roster.
Last season, Valanciunas averaged 10.4 points and 7.7 rebounds in 81 games. The idea is that the physically strong center will provide stability under the basket when Jokic is off the court.
Neither the team nor Valanciunas himself have made any official statements yet. But behind the scenes, scenarios are likely already being worked out to compensate for the potential loss. However, the list of available big men on the market is thin.
