The SüperLig is getting a prominent new addition: Besiktas has signed striker Tammy Abraham (27) with great fanfare, sending a message to the competition.
Besiktas has not had much to do with the championship in Turkey in recent years. After the 2024/25 season, they were 33 points behind champions Galatasaray, with 22 points separating them from “championship contenders” Fenerbahce. The balance of power has shifted. But Besiktas would like to restore it.
The 2023/24 cup winners are sending out a strong signal in the form of a new signing. Besiktas is loaning English striker Tammy Abraham from AS Roma for a loan fee of two million euros for the coming season. There is an obligation to buy, which will take effect if certain conditions are met. Then another 13 million euros would flow from Istanbul to Rome – in installments until 2030, according to the Besiktas website.
Abraham is expected to be followed by further transfers in order to gradually close the ever-widening gap on the competition on the Bosporus.
Not much to follow a strong debut season
But how quickly can Abraham, who will be joining coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, really help Besiktas? The former England international (11 caps, three goals) has struggled with injuries in recent years. His parent club Roma, which paid Chelsea over €40 million for him in the summer of 2021, loaned the striker to Milan in the summer of 2024.
After Abraham’s strong debut season (17 goals and four assists in 37 Serie A appearances), he scored “only” eight goals in 2022/23 and just one in the following season. At Milan, Abraham made 28 league appearances last season, scoring three goals and setting up five more. In Istanbul, they are expecting figures more in line with Abraham’s debut season in Rome.
