Rooney’s record is shaky: Kane draws level with Sir Bobby Charlton

On Saturday night, Harry Kane drew level with Sir Bobby Charlton thanks to his winning goal against Switzerland. And with his 49th goal for the Three Lions, he is now just four goals away from equalling Wayne Rooney’s record.

On Saturday night, the 78th minute of the game was underway at a sold-out Wembley when Kane stepped up to the spot for England. The centre-forward’s penalty goal made all the difference against Switzerland and led the Three Lions to a 2-1 victory. In the process, the attacker also set a milestone as the 28-year-old drew level with Sir Bobby Charlton, who also scored 49 goals in an England shirt.

The striker, who plays for Spurs in the Premier League, is now just five goals away from replacing Wayne Rooney as England’s record goalscorer. Rooney himself needed a total of 120 games to reach the current top mark of 53 goals. Kane has played 68 games for England and is already close to Rooney’s record.

The Three Lions host Côte d’Ivoire on Tuesday before the Nations League matches in June – perhaps Kane will be crowned record goalscorer by then. And: If it doesn’t happen by the end of the year, England coach Gareth Southgate smirked and said that the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar would also be a suitable time for the new record.
