Ronaldo did not bother turning up for the Champions League group draw and awards ceremony in Monaco yesterday and his agent Jorge Mendes didn’t hold back with his anger regarding the Player of the Year award.
Ronaldo decided not to attend the ceremony
Ronaldo won the Forward of the Season but came second in the voting for the Player of the Season award and showed his discontent with a no-show. His agent Mendes spoke on the main award: “Football is played on the field and that’s where Cristiano won. He scored 15 goals, carried Real Madrid on his back and conquered the Champions League again.”
“It’s ridiculous, shameful. The winner is not in doubt, as Ronaldo is the best in his position.” After the outburst, it is probably a good thing that he now plays for Juventus, as you cannot imagine those comments will go down too well with his former teammates. Not sure whether Mendes actually watched the final but Ronaldo was way below his best as Modric and Bale eclipsed him in the match.
Juventus director is also angry about the award
The director of his new team, Giuseppe Marotta also voiced his disapproval of the award not going to their record signing: “Our criticism concerns a deep bitterness for this decision, because the award refers to the Champions League and not to the World Cup and I believe that Cristiano Ronaldo has given the best emotions of the last edition and also fantastic goals.”
It is almost as though they don’t quite grasp the idea of voting, where coaches and journalists from each club were given votes. There is no doubting that Ronaldo has been more than incredible in the Champions League for the past decade but surely it is someone other than Ronaldo and Messi’s turn to pick up awards now?
