Owner Also Led Bordeaux to Ruin: Boavista Porto Facing Closure

The historic club Boavista Porto must cease operations. The 2001 Portuguese champion was already relegated to amateur soccer last season. What makes this particularly ironic is that the club’s owner is Gerard Lopez, who also owns Girondins Bordeaux. The French club was recently forced to be relegated due to financial difficulties.

Due to financial problems, Boavista Porto must cease operations by July 31. This is according to a letter from insolvency administrator Clarisse Barros, as quoted by O Jogo. The club failed to pay the monthly fee of 55,000 euros required to postpone the insolvency proceedings.

Last season, Boavista filed for insolvency, was excluded from professional soccer, and was forced to start in the lowest amateur division. In November 2025, the club withdrew from league play. Now, its final demise may be sealed. The closure of the club would affect not only its soccer division but all of the club’s departments.

Owner Lopez is no stranger

In 2021, Luxembourg-born Gerard Lopez acquired a majority stake in the club. The entrepreneur is no stranger to the scene; in addition to Boavista Porto, the 54-year-old also owns Girondins Bordeaux. The former top French club was also recently relegated to at least the 6th division due to financial difficulties. From 2020 to 2022, Lopez was also the owner of Royal Mouscron. The Belgian club was forced to file for bankruptcy in 2022 and was dissolved that same year. Now, after a wild downward spiral, Boavista has also been hit.

The club’s history is marked by ups and downs. In the 2000–2001 season, Boavista sensationally won the Portuguese championship, breaking the dominance of Sporting, Benfica, and FC Porto. In 2008, the club was forcibly relegated to the second division due to alleged match-fixing, but returned to the top flight in 2013. After Boavista’s relegation from the top division, the club’s downfall began.

On Tuesday, one day before the insolvency administrator ordered the suspension of match operations, the club submitted a restructuring plan. Speaking to the Portuguese news agency Lusa, club president Rui Garrido Pereira expressed optimism: “The board is focused on making the restructuring plan viable. If it is approved, this could mean the end of the insolvency proceedings and the resumption of the club’s operations as soon as possible.”
