More Years at Anfield Road: Szoboszlai Signs a “Long-Term” Extension with Liverpool

Dominik Szoboszlai has been playing for Liverpool FC since 2023. His contract, which was originally set to expire in 2028, has now been extended early. The Hungarian will remain at Anfield Road for several more years.

At the RB academies in Salzburg and Leipzig, Dominik Szoboszlai developed into a world-class central midfielder and eventually transferred to Liverpool FC in 2023. Since then, the Hungarian has been an indispensable part of the starting lineup. Over the course of three seasons, he has made 33, 36, and 36 appearances in the Premier League and even won the English title with LFC in 2025. And he apparently sees himself playing for the Reds for several more years, as Szoboszlai has extended his contract—which was originally set to expire in 2028—two years before its expiration. In its announcement on Friday, Liverpool FC did not provide specific details on the contract’s duration, but according to media reports, his new contract is set to run through 2031.

Szoboszlai wants to “win everything”—the Champions League trophy is still missing

“I’m just happy to be here, as I’ve said many times before,” Szoboszlai is quoted as saying in the club’s announcement. He wants to “be a role model for everyone, as best I can. “When I signed my contract, I said I wanted to win everything. That hasn’t changed one bit. It’s still the same: I want to win everything that’s possible, including, for example, the Champions League.” Szoboszlai has already won the Premier League, but the Champions League trophy is still missing from his collection.

The 25-year-old has made 105 Premier League appearances for Liverpool so far, scoring 15 goals. Last season, he was repeatedly called upon to fill in out of position. Due to Liverpool’s shortage of players at the fullback positions, Szoboszlai was regularly deployed as a right back. If the injury concerns surrounding the regular right-backs—Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley—ease up in the coming season, he should once again be pulling the strings more often in his natural position in central midfield.
