In the MLS, Chicago Fire scored an almost historic victory against DC United. A toddler caused a curious incident.
Chicago Fire narrowly missed out on the biggest win in MLS history. On Saturday night, the team won its away game 7-1 at DC United. They were just one goal short of equaling the record: in June 1998, Los Angeles Galaxy won 8-1 at FC Dallas – also away from home. To date, it is the only game in MLS history in which a team has scored eight goals in a single match. Five other games in the history of the league have ended 7-0.
Chicago came very close to this record against an overwhelmed capital city team: Center forward Tom Barlow scored a hat trick (30th, 44th, 65th), with further goals coming from Swiss player Maren Haile-Selassie (8th), former Lille striker Jonathan Bamba (23rd), Danish player Philip Zinckernagel (56th) and substitute Brian Gutierrez (90+1). Dominique Badji (60′) scored a consolation goal for DC United.
Toddler runs onto the field
A curious incident occurred shortly after the restart: with the score at 4-0 to Chicago, a toddler suddenly ran onto the field, apparently having been sitting with his mother in the front row of the stands. With the action taking place just a few meters away, only Fire defender Omar Gonzalez recognized the situation and quickly stepped in front of the unusual streaker to protect him before he was caught by a security guard and returned to his mother.
For Chicago, Bastian Schweinsteiger’s former club, the resounding victory was a little redemption: on the 10th matchday of the current season, Fire had lost 7-2 to Nashville SC at the end of April. Since then, however, the team has been on the rise, winning four of its last five games. Fire climbs to ninth place in the Eastern Conference table, with DC United in 12th place.
