NBA Infinite: Breakthrough for eSports in basketball?

Will NBA 2K soon have competition? NBA Infinite could further develop eSports in digital basketball – and has a clear target group for it

“Easy to learn” and “hard to master”: this is what characterizes an eSport title, Sebastian Moritz once explained at eSport. Specifically, it was about digital basketball. Although there is an eSports scene in Germany, it is nowhere near as developed as in FC 24, for example.

One possible reason for this could be the challenging gameplay of the basketball simulation from 2K. This could change with NBA Infinite, which focuses more on the competition. eSport was in Paris and was able to get an impression of the basketball game, which will be released exclusively for mobile devices

Model Rocket League?

At first glance, the basic structure is similar to that of Rocket League. The focus is on ranked matches, which can be played in 3v3 or 5v5, but also in 1v1.

The team can be set up using trading cards, similar to My TEAM from NBA 2K. The question remains as to how promos and loot boxes will be dealt with in NBA Infinite. The latter do exist, but without consumable items such as boosts or fitness. Cards can also be leveled up and improved – and traded on a market.

If you like things a little more relaxed or want to train, you can also take advantage of the various casual modes. Here there are challenges against the AI as 1v1 or a 3-point challenge.

No hyperactive movements, significantly fewer skills

Back to “easy to learn”: In terms of gameplay, this can certainly be said for NBA Infinite. There may be the odd dribble or two, such as the Euro Step, but there are no numerous skills whose button combinations you have to memorize. Simplifying the tricks makes perfect sense not only from an eSports perspective, but also in terms of the platform.

Like NBA 2K, NBA Infinite also dispenses with hyperactive movements at first glance. Accordingly, the gameplay is somewhat slower. It remains to be seen whether this will continue with stronger cards. As in FC 24, the pace increases as soon as the items get significantly better

Conclusion

The target group for NBA Infinite is clearly defined. Users who are looking for a story mode or want to experience a player career are at the wrong address. The extent to which the developer itself wants to further develop eSports in digital basketball – for example through community management – is still open. Level Infinite has received questions about this, but they have not yet been answered. The launch date for the new game is February 17. The title will be free for both Android and iOS devices.
