Munich has already hosted the most important match in European club soccer five times. FC Bayern has yet to win the title there. Will 2028 mark their next attempt?
Munich is once again bidding to host the Champions League final. The Bavarian capital hopes to host the most important match in European club soccer again as early as 2028. The Munich City Council’s Sports Committee endorsed the bid during its meeting. Munich demonstrated in 2025 that it can host major sporting events at the highest international level, said Mayor Dominik Krause.
As recently as 2025, Munich hosted the Champions League final, which saw Paris Saint-Germain’s historic 5-0 victory over Inter Milan. The Champions League final has been held a total of five times at FC Bayern’s home stadium. There has not yet been a Munich victory in any of these finals. In particular, the dramatic “Finale dahoam” in 2012 at the Allianz Arena—which ended in defeat against Chelsea FC in a penalty shootout thriller—remains etched in memory. In 2025, FCB was eliminated by Inter Milan in the quarterfinals while on its way to its second home final.
BVB’s Greatest Triumph in 1997
In 1997, rival Borussia Dortmund even celebrated the greatest success in the club’s history against Juventus Turin at Munich’s old Olympic Stadium. Additionally, Olympique Marseille became the first winner of the newly founded Champions League in 1993, and prior to that, Nottingham Forest won the European Cup in Munich in 1979.
This year, the Champions League final will be held at the Estadio Metropolitano, the home stadium of Atlético Madrid.
