Dennis Schröder has spoken out clearly about the NBA system. For the Braunschweig native, it is slavery how players can be moved back and forth between teams against their will. The captain of the national team is calling for changes.
”At the end of the day, your salary remains the same. You have to go to another city. It’s a luxury problem,” Schröder said in an interview with NBC Bay Area after the victory against the Orlando Magic (104-99) on Tuesday night about the NBA’s trade system. The 31-year-old knows this all too well: Schröder was traded twice last year, and has been involved in five trades in his career since his debut.
“Of course it’s exciting for the media, but I’ve been doing this for twelve years. It’s business as usual for me. I have my own team in Germany, so I know how it works.” For Schröder, it has become the norm, but he still doesn’t approve of the system.
“It’s like modern slavery. Others can decide where you should go even though you have a contract. Sure, we make a lot of money and can provide for our families, but they can always say, ‘You’re not coming to work tomorrow. You’re playing somewhere else now’. The teams can decide that and there should be changes.”
Schröder wants changes in the NBA
However, Schröder has no real approach, yet it still annoys him that superstars like Luka Doncic are traded. Current teammates like Andrew Wiggins or Kevon Looney, who were important players for the franchise in the 2022 title, could still be traded. For Schröder, this is absurd. “I understand it for players who have been with the team for a year or two, but after a certain time … This needs to be addressed in the collective agreement,” Schröder continued.
Schröder himself came to the Golden State Warriors in December via trade, for whom he has played 24 games so far. The DBB star averages 10.6 points and 4.4 assists. However, there are also rumors surrounding Schröder that the Warriors may still release him by 9 p.m. on Thursday.
