Meunier’s potentially momentous sprint

The next test match win, the next injured: Thomas Meunier had to be substituted injured after only five minutes played in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-2 win over Manchester United – this could have far-reaching consequences.

This sprint could have far-reaching consequences for Borussia Dortmund and Thomas Meunier: It was the 67th minute of the test match between BVB and Manchester United on Sunday evening (local time) in Las Vegas. A long ball flew behind the Dortmund chain. The ex-Borussian Jadon Sancho took off deep, Meunier also picked up speed to get to the ball before his former team-mate. But after only a few metres he broke off the sprint and grabbed his back thigh. Sancho had a clear run – and broke off in fairness, while Meunier immediately signalled for a substitution.

Meunier has to leave the pitch after only five minutes

The Belgian had only been on the field for five minutes at Allegiant Stadium at that point, with one more not added. Ole Pohlmann replaced him immediately. Limping off the field, Meunier was consoled by Niklas Süle. But the frustration ran deep. Disappointed, he took off with his coach Edin Terzic before sitting on the substitutes’ bench, shaking his head. A final diagnosis has yet to be made, but Meunier’s reaction to the pain alone suggests that a break is imminent – and at an inopportune time.

Meunier is one of those players who may leave BVB this transfer period if they find a taker. The right-back only plays a minor role in Borussia’s sporting plans. The Belgian, who has a lavish contract in Dortmund, is therefore not averse in principle to leaving the club.

But if you have to take a long break, you can’t recommend yourself. The clock is ticking: On 1 September at 6 p.m. the transfer window closes.
