Mayor’s appeal: ManCity and Liverpool want FA Cup semi-final moved

Will the FA Cup semi-final between Manchester City and Liverpool FC not take place at Wembley? Even politicians are now calling for that.

The mayors of Manchester and Liverpool are demanding that the FA relocate the cup clash to the north-west of the country. The mayors of Manchester and Liverpool are calling on the FA to move the cup tie to the north-west of the country to accommodate fans who might otherwise face an inconvenient journey.

Due to track works planned over Easter for several years, there will be no direct services between Manchester and London or Liverpool and London around the semi-final weekend on 16/17 April. Despite complaints from supporters of both clubs, the FA has so far stuck with Wembley as the venue.

“Without fast, direct trains, many people will have no option but to drive, fly, take overly complex train journeys or book overnight accommodation,” Andy Burnham, mayor of Greater Manchester, and Liverpool mayor Steve Rotheram wrote in a joint letter on Tuesday, warning of excessive costs and environmental impact.

The other semi-final has not been affected by the train cancellations: Chelsea FC and Crystal Palace, two London clubs, will meet.
