ManUnited disappoints again: Newcastle easily in the quarterfinals

Manchester United could not stop the downward trend in the League Cup against Newcastle United and lost in the end deservedly with 0:3.

United coach Erik ten Hag made seven changes compared to the 0-3 derby defeat against Manchester City: Reguilon, Hannibal, Casemiro, Antony, Mount, Garnacho and Martial were allowed to start. Evans, Eriksen, Amrabat, Bruno Fernandes, McTominay, Rashford and Höjlund moved to the bench.

Eddie Howe made eight changes to his starting eleven, with Dubravka, Livramento, Krafth, Dumett, Targett, Hall, Willock and Ritchie replacing Pope, Trippier, Lascelles, Schär, Burn, Bruno Guimaraes, Almiron and Wilson for the 2-2 draw at Wolverhampton. Only Longstaff, Joelinton and Gordon remained starting personnel.

The big rotation was evident for both the Red Devils and Magpies at the start. The teams felt their way into the match and fought for control of the game. There were alternating periods of possession, with goalmouth action rare.

Newcastle pull off one-two

Newcastle then took the lead with their first chance, Livramento sending Almiron in from a half-left position (28th). The 1:0 gave momentum to the guests, who subsequently appeared more and more offensively and increased a little later: Hall scored a wonderful direct shot into the right corner (36.).

The Red Devils’ lack of self-confidence was evident. Ten Hag’s team didn’t manage much. Offensive approaches came almost exclusively from a distance, but even the long-range shots remained harmless.

United disappoints – Willock for 3:0

This did not change in the second half. A small revival in the first few minutes after the change of ends – United got stuck in the Magpies’ half at one point without becoming really compelling – was nipped in the bud by the 0:3: Willock drove the ball to the edge of the sixteen after winning the ball and buried it irresistibly into the right corner (60th).

The game was decided. A once again disappointing Manchester United lacked pace, ideas and determination. At times, the home side looked helpless. The Magpies, on the other hand, managed the clear lead without any problems and got it over time.

The Red Devils thus suffered another bitter defeat after the derby loss. Newcastle can be happy about the quarterfinal in the League Cup.

The Premier League continues for both teams next Saturday. United host Fulham FC (1.30pm) and Newcastle host Arsenal FC at 6.30pm.
