Agit Kabayel dreams of fighting Oleksandr Usyk. Now Germany’s boxing ace wants to challenge the superstar.
Agit Kabayel is reaching for the stars. For months, Germany’s boxing star has been openly dreaming of a fight against heavyweight sensation Oleksandr Usyk.
“Next week, Rico Verhoeven is fighting Oleksandr Usyk. My job is to go there. My job is to seek out the sporting challenge and simply challenge Usyk in a straight, gentlemanly way.” In front of the cheering crowd in Zurich, he revealed exclusive information: “Riyadh Season would like to come to Germany and finance the fight against Usyk.”
Will Usyk fight Kabayel?
The Ukrainian Usyk will defend his WBC heavyweight title on May 23 in Giza, Egypt, against the Dutchman Verhoeven. As the WBC interim world champion, Kabayel holds the right to a mandatory title fight against Usyk, which the association has scheduled for the fall.
“Maybe I’ll fight Kabayel—maybe I won’t fight Tyson Fury a third time and will face Kabayel instead,” Usyk told the Daily Mail in late March. At the same time, the 39-year-old emphasized that his plans are not set in stone: “I’m just stating my plan, but it’s not set in stone.” He rejected calls for a mandatory fight against Kabayel. “I understand that Agit’s fans are saying: You have to fight him. But I don’t have to fight him.”
