Two years of FC Bayern are behind him. Leroy Sané has not yet lived up to expectations. Nevertheless, those responsible continue to hope for his breakthrough. The winger undoubtedly has the talent. And maybe the prominent newcomer will help too.
He was not satisfied with the past second half of the season and neither were those responsible at FC Bayern. Now Leroy Sané will start his third season with the Munich club next week. And of course the question arises again whether he will finally take off. There are doubts, and the fact that with Sadio Mané a starter and not a back-up for the wing position was signed also shows that the confidence in Sané is no longer fully there. That could become a problem for the 26-year-old due to this big-name competition, but also, as strange as it may sound, a new opportunity.
Get out of the glare – it could be liberating
Because with the arrival of the ex-Liverpool star, Sané moves out of the spotlight he never really wanted to be in anyway. That was the glamour wish of the decision-makers at Säbener Straße and the impression created, which Sané may have shaped due to his extroverted appearance. But he himself is far from being a champagne boy. He wants to play football. Similar to what he was at Manchester City, when he was one of many and the demand on him was different, when he often made strong appearances coming off the bench. And thus also played his way into Munich’s field of vision.
Is the light-heartedness coming back?
So is the road away from supposed superstardom, the road towards superstardom – just in a different way? Mané could be a certain mental release there, although the fight for a starting eleven place will certainly not be easier for Sané. If the German international lacked the lightness of being in the past half-season – his last scoring point came with his winning goal in Frankfurt (1:0) – Mané could bring back the light-heartedness he had hoped for so long. At least that is the hope after FC Bayern has so far failed to find a solution for Sané.
